Real Madrid’s pursuit of Rodri has taken a step back in recent days, more specifically after the team’s win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

The Merengues, who are undoubtedly looking for a new midfield recruit in the summer, had the Spaniard at the top of their list of targets but took a step back, deferring the decision until after the FIFA World Cup.

Now, Fabrizio Romano brings another report that further distances Rodri from Real Madrid, perhaps even sealing his future in England.

A renewal on the table

Indeed, as confirmed by the Italian journalist, Manchester City have offered Rodri a new contract and the player is not completely opposed to renewing.

Real Madrid are indeed interested in the player, but the final decision rests in his hands and will be taken based not only on his feelings but also considering his family and personal life.

If Rodri rejects the new deal that Manchester City proposes, the English giants will still demand a big fee in the summer given that his deal is until 2027.

He could opt to push and see out his contract, but that will not align with Real Madrid’s immediate need.

If Los Blancos are thus keen on signing only the Ballon d’Or winner, they will be forced to shell out big money in June or wait for a year, neither of which looks particularly likely.

The situation is thus complicated.

As it stands, Real Madrid will likely wait for the World Cup to judge Rodri’s quality and ability to lead, and a positive result in the mega-event will bring them right back into the race.
