Marcus Rashford’s hopes of remaining at Barcelona have suffered a significant setback after Manchester United rejected the Catalan club’s opening proposal to sign the English forward permanently.
According to SPORT, Barcelona have already made their first move to retain Rashford following his impressive loan spell, but the offer has fallen well short of Manchester United’s expectations.
It must be remembered that the two clubs had previously agreed on a purchase option worth €30 million when the loan deal was completed, yet Barcelona are reluctant to meet that figure.
As a result, negotiations are now facing their first major obstacle, leaving the player’s future increasingly uncertain ahead of the new season.
Despite the complications, Rashford’s preference remains unchanged, even though his desire alone may not be enough to secure a permanent stay at the club.

The report states that Barcelona attempted to test Manchester United’s position by submitting a proposal worth around €15 million, effectively half of the agreed purchase option included in the original loan agreement.
Unsurprisingly, the Premier League side rejected the offer.
The highlight of that offer is the huge gap that still exists between the two clubs’ valuations of the player.
While Barcelona clearly believe the agreed €30 million fee is excessive, Manchester United do not appear willing to significantly lower their demands at this stage.
At this moment, the situation leaves Rashford in a difficult position because even though he is not expected to be part of Manchester United’s long-term plans, the English club are still seeking a transfer fee.

Furthermore, it is expected that Manchester United will include Rashford in pre-season preparations when training resumes.
However, there is little expectation that he will remain a part of their project once the campaign begins.
Meanwhile, Rashford’s transfer fee is not the only challenge standing in the way of his return, as the arrival of Anthony Gordon has significantly increased competition for places and could complicate any attempt to secure Rashford’s continuity.
Simply put, even if the club eventually reach an agreement with Manchester United, Rashford would face a much more competitive environment than the one he encountered during his loan spell.
