The Premier League has opened an investigation after the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park was halted in the second half following a report of alleged discriminatory abuse directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.
The Premier League said in a statement that the pause followed its on-field anti-discrimination protocol and that the incident would be fully investigated, offering support to the player and both clubs. It also stressed that racism has no place in the game or society, and that it will continue working with stakeholders and authorities to ensure inclusive, welcoming stadiums.
On the pitch, Sunderland came from behind to win 2-1 and complete a derby double over Newcastle United. Anthony Gordon gave the hosts an early lead. Chemsdine Talbi levelled 12 minutes after the restart.
Brian Brobbey struck a 90th-minute winner, his sixth of the season and only Sunderland’s 10th Premier League away goal this campaign.
Details of the stoppage were published via the Premier League’s Match Centre account on X.
