Premier League clubs have unanimously agreed to keep the £30 cap on away tickets for the next two seasons, a move that benefits Sunderland supporters and their top flight counterparts.

The price limit, introduced in 2016, has been in place for a decade and will now run until summer 2028. The Premier League said in a statement that away fans underpin match atmospheres, that away attendances have risen from 82 to 91 per cent since 2016, and that it recognises the extra costs of travelling.

By the end of the current mandate, the cap will have covered 12 seasons.

The Football Supporters' Association welcomed the extension, describing it as good news for travelling fans and crediting campaign work by members. It also urged club owners to listen to groups warning that home tickets are often unaffordable.

Separately, Sunderland this week made a number of tickets available again for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park after a large-scale breach of ticketing rules.

The club released 65 seats back on sale on Tuesday following action against a supporter who misused an allocation, and those tickets have since been resold.
