Joe Willock was subjected to disgraceful racist abuse following Newcastle’s defeat to Fulham on Saturday.
The United midfielder reporting/highlighting it via his personal social media.
Whether this is from supposed Newcastle United fans or not, the fact remains that it is totally unacceptable.
The club on Sunday morning released an official statement (see below).
Now the Premier League have released their own official statement (also below), backing up the NUFC one.
Sadly, this is not just a problem for Newcastle United, not just for football.
There will always be pathetic people out there and the big problem is the easy access to social media for everybody, the fact some will use it for these purposes, with the massive tech companies refusing to properly police it.
Premier League official statement – 2 February 2025:
‘The Premier League is appalled by the abuse received by Joe Willock.
We are working with the club and authorities to support Joe.
We will investigate and where possible take action against any individual we are able to identify.
Discrimination of any kind has no place in our game or anywhere in society.
If you see or hear abuse, report it HERE.’
Newcastle United official statement – 2 February 2025:
‘Newcastle United strongly condemns the appalling racist abuse received by Joe Willock on Instagram on Saturday evening.
There is no room for racism anywhere.
Joe has been given the club’s full support and we will continue to do all we can to ensure the welfare of our players, staff and supporters.
The club has reported the abuse to Meta – the owners of Instagram, and urges all social media companies to do more to eradicate this behaviour from their platforms.
