Leeds United's anger at the referee and VAR in their defeat by Sunderland has been upheld, with the Premier League's Key Match Incidents Panel unanimously ruling the officials erred over a first-half penalty appeal.

In the first half Luke O'Nien grabbed Pascal Struijk around the neck, the defender went to ground in the box, Stuart Attwell allowed play to continue and VAR did not intervene. According to the BBC, the panel judged O'Nien was not looking at the ball, used a non-football action to hold Struijk and prevented his progress towards goal.

Daniel Farke later called the decision crazy. Officiating has been a recurring theme in his recent media appearances.

He was angered by the lack of a penalty for an apparent handball against Man City, and was sent off at full-time after jogging onto the pitch to ask referee Peter Bankes why he had blown up so soon after the minimum stoppage time was played.

At Crystal Palace on Sunday he was frustrated by Gabriel Gudmundsson's dismissal for a second yellow card by Thomas Bramall, insisting the challenge was never a caution. Later in the game Brennan Johnson avoided a second booking for a foul on James Justin, which Farke felt was worse than Gudmundsson's.
