Newly promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town have opened talks with Celtic over the signing of Daizen Maeda. The Japanese talisman was instrumental in Celtic’s title success last year, scoring vital goals in the run-in to deliver the title.
It was clear that Maeda would attract interest and that the late goal against Hearts, to leapfrog the Jambos on the final day of the season would be his last at Celtic Park.
It is being reported that The Tractor Boys are keen on the 28-year-old and have held talks over a possible deal. Celtic will want to sell and maximise the value of Maeda, given that he has just one year left on his deal.
The report says that no formal bid has been submitted, likely as Ipswich have sounded out the asking price. Celtic will likely want in excess of £15m for the player but the reality is that we won’t see the real value of Maeda given his contract situation.
Hopefully the update results in increased interest from the Premier League for Maeda, which drives the price up.
Signed by Ange Postecoglou midway through his first season, Maeda scored on his debut against Hibs. In 212 appearances, he has scored 79 goals and assisted on 38 occasions, including 4 goals in the UEFA Champions League as well as 7 goals and 5 assists against Rangers.
When Maeda goes, it will hurt given his quality and status at the club. Daizen has eclipsed Kyogo as being the best of Celtic’s signings from Japan since Naka.
Celtic have been linked with Haissem and Hogh as they look to bolster their squad. Just one signing has been made since the window opened, the acquisition of Duran from Qarabag but the reality is that not enough is being done and supporters are becoming increasingly concerned.
