The Premier League has turned down a World Cup-style expansion of VAR for next season after discussions with PGMOL, despite months of controversy around the system.

The Guardian reports that clubs fear further disruption and are not prepared to overrule PGMOL by adding checks on corners and second yellow cards.

IFAB approved a regulation change in February allowing VAR to intervene on the award of corners and on second bookings from next month. Referees at the World Cup will use those powers following a FIFA request.

PGMOL is understood to be concerned that extending reviews to corners and bookings could lengthen matches, risk alienating broadcasters and increase pressure on officials.

FIFA has taken a different view, with referees’ committee chair Pierluigi Collina and president Gianni Infantino said to worry that a wrong corner decision could heavily influence a World Cup game.

Fan discontent persists, with a March survey claiming 75 per cent oppose VAR, yet the technology is not going away.
