Liverpool host Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, with both teams hoping for a much needed victory.
A win for either team is vital for team morale after a run of poor performances. Liverpool are currently sitting at seventh in the Premier League after losing four consecutive matches. The Reds have had better luck in the Champions League, currently placing at 10th in the table after last week’s win against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Crystal Palace are also in a rut following a strong start to the season. The Eagles are winless in their last four matches after an unbeaten first 10 this season, and currently sit 10th in the Premier League and 16th in the UEFA Conference League. Palace will hope that this Carabao Cup tie serves as a means by which they can get a win on the board. As part of those four games unbeaten, they have lost their past two matches against AEK Lanarca and Arsenal respectively, and will be entering this match confident they can end this losing streak.
A win in Wednesday’s match will be welcomed whole-heartedly by both sides after a run of poor performances. An injury-laden Liverpool meet an exhausted Palace, with a loss meaning one team will be knocked out of the Carabao Cup; a potentially huge blow to either side’s morale and confidence.
Liverpool do not look to be the threatening team they were last season, with key players such as Alexander Isak and Alisson Becker still signed off with injuries and four consecutive losses in the Premier League: they look vulnerable.
Crystal Palace have faced Liverpool twice already this season, winning both their Premier League encounter and the penalty shootout which won them the Community Shield. Palace manager Oliver Glasner expressed confidence in his team ahead of Wednesday’s match, saying: “We go there tomorrow, and we go there to win the game”.
The match will kick off at 19:45 GMT at Anfield and will be broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK.
