Liverpool side are winless in their last four matches as they travel to Germany to face Eintracht Frankfurt in their third UEFA Champions League group-stage test.
It’s been anything but quiet for Liverpool since lifting the Premier League title. Over £400 million has been spent on an influx of world-class talent, yet all eyes have been on Arne Slot’s side for reasons beyond their spending.
Late goals, dropped points, and now a four-game winless streak have seen the Reds slip to third in the Premier League.
The recent run has been a turbulent one. Liverpool fell to Galatasaray in Istanbul in their previous Champions League outing and were beaten 2–1 by Manchester United on Sunday, their third straight league defeat.
Much has been made of the team’s cohesion following those setbacks. Slot has been handed a squad packed with stars, but several new arrivals have struggled to find form.
Aleksander Isak and Florian Wirtz, in particular, have looked like shadows of their former selves, leaving Slot under increasing pressure to find answers.
Their next challenge comes in the form of Eintracht Frankfurt – last season’s Bundesliga third-place finishers. Dino Toppmöller’s side have conceded 18 goals already this season and have let in two or more in six of their last seven matches. However, they remain dangerous going forward, scoring 12 times in their previous six outings.
Liverpool will also need to be wary of former Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, who is fit and available for an emotional return to his old club.
Record signing Isak is expected to lead the line once again, while Ryan Gravenberch is a doubt – a significant blow given his excellent form this season. Andy Robertson is also likely to return to the starting XI in place of Milos Kerkez, whose recent struggles have mirrored those of his side.
Frankfurt, meanwhile, will look to in-form forward Can Uzun, who has already netted six goals this season, while Jonathan Burkardt has also been a consistent threat.
Despite their defensive issues, centre-backs Robin Koch and Arthur Theate have remained a steady partnership and are expected to continue together.
With both sides boasting attacking firepower but showing defensive fragility, Wednesday night’s clash promises goals – and drama – at both ends of the pitch.
