Tottenham Hotspur are set to conclude their battle for survival at home to Everton on Sunday afternoon in one of the most colossal final Premier League fixtures on the cards.
Spurs haven’t had the best preparation coming into this must-win contest after falling to a 2-1 defeat in their last Premier League outing against Chelsea.
Everton are also hoping for a miracle to finish in the top eight, plus a win against Spurs would be a massive favour to David Moyes’ former employers, West Ham United.
Tottenham head into the final weekend of the season under huge pressure after missing a major chance to guarantee their Premier League safety.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi and his players knew victory against Chelsea would have secured survival, but instead they suffered another frustrating defeat that left nerves growing around the club.
That sets the tone for Sunday’s high-stakes contest, but they’ll need a much better performance than the one they put up in the London derby.
Chelsea looked vulnerable before the Spurs clash after losing the FA Cup final against Manchester City, but De Zerbi’s side couldn’t take advantage.
Despite the disappointment, Tottenham are still favourites to avoid relegation, and their fate is in their own hands heading into the final round of fixtures.
Spurs would only go down if they lose and West Ham beat Leeds United. Even a draw would almost certainly be enough, unless West Ham win by an unlikely 12-goal margin.
One major concern for Tottenham has been their terrible home form. They have collected only 12 points on home turf this season, the joint-worst record in the league alongside Burnley.
Meanwhile, Everton may feel confident heading into their final away match after picking up 26 points on the road this season. Only Arsenal and Man City have won more away games than the Toffees.
The Toffees suffered their eighth home defeat of the season last weekend, letting a 1-0 lead slip in a 3-1 beating by Sunderland.
Sitting 12th, Everton will need divine intervention to sneak into a European spot, but Moyes can still do his former club a solid by beating Spurs.
Everton have dropped off over the past few weeks. They’ve failed to win any of their last six Premier League games (D3, L3) while conceding at least twice in each match.
The Toffees lost 3-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this season. They’ve also lost each of their last four away games against Tottenham by an aggregate scoreline of 13-1.
Tottenham have been boosted by the return of Dominic Solanke, although he’ll likely start Sunday’s must-win contest on the bench after shaking off a hamstring problem.
However, they’ll still be without a host of first-team stars, including Ben Davies, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, Xavi Simons, and Cristian Romero, who isn’t expected to be in attendance.
Meanwhile, Everton will be without Idrissa Gueye, whose initially diagnosed “minor” injury is expected to keep him on the sidelines for nearly a month.
Jarrad Branthwaite and Jack Grealish are also out of the loop, although that hasn’t stopped Everton from negotiating a potential permanent deal for the latter.
(4-2-3-1): Antonin Kinsky; Pedro Porro, Kevin Danso, Mickey van de Ven, Destiny Udogie; Rodrigo Bentancur, Joao Palhinha; Randal Kolo Muani, Conor Gallagher, Mathys Tel; Richarlison.
