Dieumerci Mbokani has announced that he is retiring from professional football. The 39-year-old DR Congo forward made the announcement on social media and brings to end a career that will likely see him enter the Pro League hall of fame in the future. The striker, who had spells in England with Norwich and Hull, will certainly go down in history as one of the best strikers to play in Belgium.

During the 2012/2013 the striker scored an impressive 27 goals in 38 games for Anderlecht as he won the Golden Shoe award for best player in the league, as well as the Ebony Shoe, and award for the best African player in the league. Mbokani scored over 130 Pro League goals, having played for the likes of Standard Liege and Antwerp as well as two spells with Anderlecht. He announced himself in Belgium football during the 2008/2009 season with Standard Liege, where he scored 20 goals in 41 games. Mbokani won two titles with Standard, three with Anderlecht and a domestic cup during his time with Antwerp. Even during the latter stages of his career, Mbokani was a menace in front of goal. The Congolese international scored 16 goals for Beveren during the 2022/2023 season in the Belgian second tier.

He also retires as the current top scorer for the DRC with 22 goals in 49 games. He finished joint top scorer with four others during the 2015 AFCON, scoring three goals in six games as the DRC made it to the semi-finals and won the third place play-off. There is an argument to be made that Mbokani is the greatest Congolese player to play in Belgium given his goal scoring exploits over the years.
