Barcelona forward winger Lamine Yamal showed heart, skill, and fight in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan.
Even though the match ended in heartbreak for Barça, Yamal stood out as one of the team’s best players on the pitch.
The 17-year-old tried everything to get on the scoresheet, but he was either denied by Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer or the post.
From the first minute, Yamal made life difficult for Inter’s defence. He constantly ran at them, creating space and chances.
It wasn’t easy for the Italian side to stop him, and often it took more than one defender to bring him down. His energy and confidence at such a young age gave fans hope, even in a tough situation like this.
The biggest talking point of the match came in the 68th minute when the score was locked at 2-2. Barcelona were awarded a penalty after Henrikh Mkhitaryan brought down Yamal.
But the decision did not stand for long. The VAR asked Polish referee Szymon Marciniak to review the incident, but surprisingly, he chose not to check the monitor and cancelled the penalty without a proper review.
The foul was first made outside the box, but Yamal kept going and was clearly fouled again inside the area.
According to the rules, the final contact is what matters, and in this case, it happened inside the penalty area. It should have been a penalty, but it wasn’t given.
The resulting free-kick was a rehearsed routine, and Yamal took the final shot. It looked like it was heading towards goal, but Frenkie de Jong deflected it slightly, which might have helped Sommer save it.
In the end, Barcelona were left with a sense of injustice. Yamal’s brilliance was not enough, but his performance showed that he’s already one of the team’s most dangerous players.
