Gianluigi Donnarumma’s move from PSG to Manchester City was one of the more striking stories of the summer transfer window. The Italy international goalkeeper left Paris after contract talks collapsed, with PSG choosing to sell rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2025. His switch to City for £26 million was completed on Deadline Day and he has already made an instant impression in English football.
PSG’s sporting director Luis Campos explained that the negotiations with Donnarumma highlighted the shift in the club’s approach. Speaking to RMC Sport, he said:
“The club’s policy is to build a team more important than any individual.
Gianluigi Donnarumma asked for a salary at the level of the old PSG, not the current PSG. Our policy is closely tied to sporting performances, you earn more when you deserve it.
Gianluigi was the first player we approached about an extension, but we quickly understood that it will be difficult due to his demands.
We both took time to discuss Gianluigi’s situation, it’s a set of circumstances that led to his departure.”
PSG’s reluctance to return to the high-spending model of previous years has become clear since they lifted the Champions League in May. Having parted ways with Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar, the club has redefined its financial structure, preferring a younger and more sustainable squad profile.
For Manchester City, Donnarumma’s arrival represents another calculated move to strengthen a position of stability. He made his debut in the derby against Manchester United and delivered a typically assured display, showcasing the qualities that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after goalkeepers. At just 25, his best years are still ahead of him, and Pep Guardiola now has a player who could dominate the position for the next decade.
Donnarumma is set to make his first Champions League appearance for Manchester City against Napoli this week. For Guardiola’s team, who have long chased consistent excellence in Europe, having a goalkeeper of his calibre offers not only security but also a psychological edge. His presence in goal could prove decisive in the latter stages of the competition.
For PSG, the focus now shifts towards building a squad that reflects their revised ambitions. Winning the Champions League last season with a young and dynamic side has given validation to their approach. Donnarumma’s exit underlines the reality that players will have to align with the club’s policies rather than the other way around.
It marks the end of a short but eventful chapter for Gianluigi Donnarumma in Paris and the start of a potentially defining one at Manchester City.
