With Robert Lewandowski’s contract ending in only a few days’ time, FC Barcelona are yet to make a decision about the Pole’s continuity in their team going forward, and in the meantime, are also being linked with several players to replace him in their attack for the next season.
The player who has most strongly been linked with them for this purpose is the Atletico Madrid star, Julian Alvarez. However, he remains a key part of Diego Simeone’s team, and it would not be easy for the Catalans to get him from the Colchoneros.
Meanwhile, their difficulties seemed to have compounded in the last few days as reports had also brought Paris Saint-Germain into the conversation, with suggestions that the Paris club was again considering Alvarez and that Luis Enrique had even given approval for a possible operation, with figures around €110 million being mentioned in some reports.
However, according to SPORT, the situation is quite different as per the information from within PSG. The French club is not currently working on the signing of Julian Alvarez, and as things stand, he is not part of Luis Enrique’s immediate plans for the squad.
While there is appreciation for the player, any major investment in attack would depend more on departures and internal restructuring than on a direct move for the €90 million-rated Argentine at this stage.
It is also worth noting that PSG’s interest in Alvarez is not entirely new. The club did previously explore the possibility of signing him when he left Manchester City, with Luis Enrique’s approval at the time, but the player eventually chose to continue his career in Madrid with Atletico.
For Barcelona, this development is important. With Deco working on the potential deal, the absence of PSG from the race removes a major competitor and allows the club to approach the situation with more calm.
For now, the idea at Barça is to avoid unnecessary pressure around the operation and continue evaluating the market carefully while the season comes to an end.
The situation around Alvarez remains open, but with PSG stepping back from the picture, Barcelona can at least breathe a little easier as they assess their next move in attack.
