Paris Saint-Germain will be afforded additional time to rest following a decision from the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).

On March 26, the LFP unanimously decided to postpone the potential Ligue 1 title-deciding match between PSG and RC Lens on April 11 to May 13. This is noteworthy because PSG will play Liverpool FC in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on April 8 and April 14. Moving the Lens match allows PSG time to rest between the two matches.

The decision has sparked outrage as it seems the LFP is giving PSG an unfair advantage. However, the LFP also postponed Strasbourg’s match against Brest. Strasbourg is competing in the UEFA Conference League, and it’s important for French clubs to perform well in European competitions to improve France’s coefficient and remain a top-five league in Europe.

There’s also the concern over player health. PSG did not have its traditional break at the end of last season, and several players have gone down with injuries this season. The fixture list is congested and a break between these pivotal matches is a good idea.

PSG has a one-point lead over Lens at the top of the Ligue 1 table, with PSG having a game in hand. Moving the match to May 13 sets up an end-of-season title-deciding match for the Ligue 1 title.

PSG will have one match to prepare for Liverpool, a home match against Toulouse on April 3 at the Parc des Princes. Last season, PSG defeated Liverpool in the Round of 16 on penalties at Anfield.
