Chelsea travelled to Paris knowing that any Champions League knockout tie against PSG would demand discipline and composure. For much of the evening they showed both. Yet a chaotic final stretch turned promise into punishment, leaving the London side staring at a daunting deficit ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
PSG eventually emerged 5-2 winners, though the scoreline tells only part of a match that ebbed and flowed before slipping from Chelsea’s grasp in the closing stages.
PSG began with the sharpness expected of Europe’s reigning champions. Within ten minutes they were ahead. Bradley Barcola, questioned beforehand about his lack of recent Champions League goals, provided his response emphatically. After Ousmane Dembele’s cross was nodded into his path, Barcola drove a powerful strike through a cluster of defenders and inside the near post.
Chelsea briefly steadied themselves and even threatened parity soon after. Filip Jorgensen denied Dembele with a strong save that tipped the Frenchman’s effort on to the post. Moments later the visitors found their equaliser.
Malo Gusto surged forward and finished calmly after being picked out by Enzo Fernandez, beating Matvei Safonov with a composed strike.
Chelsea’s confidence grew and their midfield began to dictate spells of possession. Yet PSG required only seconds to restore their lead. Just 14 seconds after Cole Palmer tested Safonov, Dembele struck.
The forward accelerated beyond Wesley Fofana before finishing with precision. Desire Doue had engineered the opportunity, gliding past Moises Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah before releasing the reigning Ballon d’Or winner.
Chelsea refused to fade. In the second half they capitalised on a PSG error. Doue was caught in possession by Neto, whose low delivery found Fernandez arriving perfectly to guide the ball into the net for 2-2.
The turning point arrived abruptly. Jorgensen attempted to play out from the back but misplaced his pass directly to Barcola. Vitinha reacted instantly, lifting the ball over the stranded goalkeeper to restore PSG’s advantage.
It was a painful moment for Chelsea, who had worked tirelessly to remain level.
PSG sensed vulnerability. Luis Enrique had already introduced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, a change that would define the closing stages.
Kvaratskhelia delivered the kind of intervention elite squads rely upon in decisive moments. First came a curling strike from the edge of the area, precise and unstoppable. Then, with virtually the final kick, he added a composed sidefoot finish to extend PSG’s lead to three goals.
Chelsea had matched PSG for long stretches, creative in midfield and bold in approach. Yet against one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking units, small errors proved costly.
The tie now shifts to Stamford Bridge where Chelsea must overturn a 5-2 deficit against a PSG side capable of punishing even the smallest lapse.
