Paris Saint-Germain are showing interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to L’Equipe.
The Parisians have not initiated a move to sign him this winter window, but they could come for his signature this summer.
The Argentine international has bagged eight goals and three assists in 30 appearances for the Blues this season.
Last term, he was Chelsea’s most productive player, scoring nine goals and providing 17 assists in 53 appearances.
Fernandez would be a stellar addition to a PSG midfield that already includes Vitinha, Joao Neves, Fabian Ruiz, and stellar prospect Warren Zaire-Emery.
The price of any deal could prove a sticking point. Chelsea paid around £105 million to sign him from Benfica and will likely be hoping to make a profit from a potential sale.
More likely, the West Londoners will fight tooth and nail to keep hold of the 24-year-old, who is one of the best in the world in his position.
Not many players can dictate a game like him when he sits deep, and he is also an effective box-crasher. It will be difficult to replace his skillset.
Instead of entertaining bids, Chelsea’s focus should be on protecting and supporting Fernandez.
Elite teams do not sell their midfield anchors in their prime. They build around them.
What the Blues clearly need is a reliable deputy who can replace Fernandez without a catastrophic drop-off in control, allowing him to play fewer games across a long season.
Too often, Chelsea look disjointed when he is overworked or forced to play through fatigue.
Fernandez is the reference point in possession, the tempo-setter and the connective tissue between defence and attack.
Players of that calibre are almost impossible to replace, regardless of price.
For Chelsea, the smarter move is succession planning and depth, not self-sabotage.
