Uruguay have omitted Puma Rodríguez from their 26-man World Cup squad, leaving Vasco with only Andrés Gómez at the tournament.

According to Globo.com, Marcelo Bielsa named his final list on Monday. Rodríguez had been a regular call-up during the cycle, often as a back-up, and joined Vasco after playing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. People close to the player said he was very upset by the omission.

In Colombia’s provisional squad, Vasco had three names. Andrés Gómez and Carlos Cuesta arrived in the mid-year window last year aiming to regain places and increase competition for a World Cup spot. Rojas also made the long list but, without opportunities under Néstor Lorenzo in the cycle, was the least likely.

Cuesta featured regularly for Colombia in recent years and started at the last Copa América, when they lost the final to Argentina. After a bright start at Vasco he was recalled in November last year alongside Gómez, but fluctuating form in 2026 saw him lose ground.

Gómez, by contrast, faced fierce competition in attack from Luis Díaz, Luis Suárez, Jhon Arias and Marino Hinestroza. He became a key figure for Vasco late in 2025, built momentum and made Colombia’s final World Cup list. He is the first Vasco player called up for a World Cup in eight years.

Paulo Henrique was picked by Carlo Ancelotti for Brazil friendlies against South Korea and Japan in November last year and scored on debut. His level dipped in 2026, though he still made Brazil’s 55-man provisional list. Ancelotti chose Wesley and Ibañez for right-back in the final squad.
