Former player turned pundit Robbie Mustoe believes the Chelsea project is fascinating and praised the club’s sporting directors for making “ballsy moves.”

Chelsea have endured a difficult time both on and off the pitch following the takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022.

Almost everything at the club has changed from top to bottom in just over two years and there’s been a lack of stability, which has certainly effected on pitch performances.

However, since Enzo Maresca took over in the summer it feels like Chelsea are at their most stable both on and off the pitch since the club were taken over, with Paul Winstanley believing the 44-year-old has the right personality to manage the Blues.

The Blues currently find themselves third in the league and Maresca right now is in charge of arguably one of the most exciting projects in world football.

A high volume of players have been signed over the past two years with some successes and others not, with sporting directors Winstanley and Laurence Stewart coming in for a lot of criticism especially with their managerial appointments.

However, they have made some good decisions with the signings of Malo Gusto, Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer standing out and are now starting to get some praise.

Mustoe believes they deserve more credit than they are getting and has praised the duo for making what he described as “ballsy moves.”

“I think that this is a fascinating project. And again, I’ll say it one more time that the two sporting directors at the football club, fair play, ballsy moves,” he told The 2 Robbies Podcast.

“What they did with the philosophy of the signings, and Pochettino was finding the right way, and they still said to the owners we should change the manager, and so far so good. Well done.”

They certainly divide opinion, but you have to give credit where it’s due and on the whole it feels like the pair have done a pretty good job so far and long may that continue.
