Pyramids March On: Egyptian giants beat Ethiopian Insurance 2-0 to qualify for CAF CL group stage
Defending champions Pyramids FC sealed qualification to the CAF Champions League group stage after defeating Ethiopia Insurance 2-0 on Thursday evening at the Air Defense Stadium completing 3-1 aggregate victory.
The first leg, also played in Cairo due to Ethiopia’s lack of CAF approved venue had ended 1-1.
The breakthrough came in the 11 minute when Mostafa Ziko converted precise assist from Mohamed Chibi to give Pyramids the lead.
Despite sustained pressure, the hosts had to wait until the closing seconds to secure the result. From corner by Ewerton , an Ethiopian defender inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net sealing Pyramids passage to the next round.
This qualification keeps Pyramids on course to defend their title having won the CAF Champions League for 1st time in club history last season when they triumphed over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.
Under manager Krunoslav Jurcic, the Egyptian side has continued to demonstrate discipline and attacking balance combining experience and efficiency in both legs of the tie.
