Qatar earned their first ever point at a World Cup when Boualem Khoukhi headed a late equaliser against Switzerland.
The Swiss team were the better for much of the 90 minutes in the Santa Clara heat. However, both sides had chances early on with Edmilson Júnior showing that the unfancied Qataris had the potential going forward.
The opening goal of the game came in the 16th minute from the penalty spot. Goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada was penalised for a foul on Remo Freuler which survived what looked like a very close VAR check for offside in the build-up.
Rennes forward Breel Embolo was the coolest man in the stadium when he stepped up, waited for Abunada to dive one way and then stroke the ball into the net.
The second half followed a familiar pattern with the Swiss creating plenty of opportunities but as the game went Qatar looked less likely to mount an effective attack.
That was until the fifth of six additional minutes of stoppage time when a cross from the left by Homam Ahmed found Khoukhi rising above his defender at the far post and then heading past Gregor Kobel to snatch what for most of the game looked like an unlikely point.
