QPR and Millwall could be on red alert after Anfernee Dijksteel has been set for release by Middlesbrough.
Anfernee Dijksteel has now been officially released by Middlesbrough, which could have Millwall and Queens Park Rangers on red alert, after they were named as interested parties in the right-back.
The Suriname international featured in the majority of Championship matches for Michael Carrick's men last season, as the club narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs.
However, Dijksteel has seemingly been deemed surplus to requirements for the former Manchester United midfielder, which has subsequently seen him set for release when his contract expires next month.
Journalist Darren Witcoop reported via his X account at the end of April that London clubs Millwall and QPR were both interested in signing the experienced right-back this summer.
Now with confirmation that Dijksteel will leave the Riverside Stadium next month, both clubs might be on red alert if they remain interested in the former Charlton Athletic man.
It's that time of year again when clubs not involved in the play-offs begin to publish their retained/released list ahead of the 2025/26 season. Middlesbrough announced their list of players on Friday, which included Dijksteel.
The full-back joined Boro from Charlton in August 2019, signing for a reported fee of £2m. He went on to make over 150 appearances in six years at the club across all competitions, before being set for release on Friday.
The Amsterdam-born defender played 33 times in the Championship this season, scoring twice and chipping in with an assist as Middlesbrough finished in an underwhelming 10th place.
Now Dijksteel will have to find a new home after six fruitful years on Teesside. His next employers will be only the third senior professional club in his career, having only represented Charlton and Boro at senior level.
London isn't an area that the Suriname international is unfamiliar with, having spent the first three years of his professional career in the capital with the Addicks.
However, Witcoop reported last month that Dijksteel could be on his way back to London this summer, but instead of a reunion with The Valley, his former employers' city rivals have taken an interest in signing the free agent.
Both Millwall and QPR are reportedly keen to sign the full-back, and now confirmation of his future has been made official, the two parties could now be on red alert, as they look to win the race for his signature.
The 28-year-old has proven to be a quality player at Championship level, and would bring a great wealth of experience to either side. Although he might not be a nailed-on starter, having Dijskteel in your squad is surely a desire for any Championship manager.
It will be interesting to see which one, if either, will land the former Middlesbrough man's signature in the summer. Now clubs have been made aware that Dijksteel will indeed leave the Riverside Stadium on a free, the clubs battling to sign him will be on red alert to ensure they win the race.
