QPR are preparing for a very busy summer as they look to build on a solid first season under Julien Stephan.

The former Rennes chief was named as R’s boss last summer, and whilst they had a disappointing end to the campaign and finished 15th, there were some reasons for optimism.

Nevertheless, it’s clear that the squad is lacking in certain areas, and all connected to the club will be hoping for a productive transfer window as they look to challenge for the play-offs in 12 months time, with the new format meaning the top eight have a shot at promotion.

Christian Nourry explains Alou Diarra departure ahead of 2026/27 season

Whilst the focus will be on outgoings and incomings on the playing side of things, it appears Stephan is going to need to make a new addition to his backroom team.

That’s because QPR announced that Alou Diarra had left the club, with the former France international having linked up with Stephan following his appointment last season as first team coach.

So, he will be a big miss, and it may concern some QPR fans that they are losing someone who has such an influence on the group on a day-to-day basis.

But, speaking to the official site, CEO Christian Nourry explained why the club have allowed Diarra to leave, as the 44-year-old has ambitions to be a head coach in his own right.

I thank Alou for the year that we’ve spent together. His warmth, empathy and creativity supported the other coaching staff in attempting to get the best results possible.

Alou came to see me in April to let me know that he’d made the decision that he wants to go and be a Head Coach. We’ve decided that it’s best for both parties to part ways now. I wish him the very best in his search for a new challenge.”

QPR must back Julien Stephan as they look to kick-on

Of course, we don’t get to see how Diarra works, but he appears to be a valued figure at the club, and his CV meant he was always going to command respect from the players, as he has played at the highest level, which includes winning 44 caps for France.

So, in that respect, and the fact that Stephan clearly wanted Diarra at the club, he is going to be missed.

But, as Nourry explains, Diarra feels he is ready to take that next step into management, and it makes sense that the R’s aren’t going to stand in his way.

Now, attention turns to finding his replacement, and Stephan will no doubt have some names in mind that he thinks can help the team on the training pitch, and it will be interesting to see who they will bring in.

Then, it’s about showing support to Stephan in the transfer market. Again, there are glaring issues that must be addressed, and it’s important QPR add quality to help some of the talented players already at the club such as Rumarn Burrell, Ronnie Edwards, Richard Kone, Nicolas Madsen and Harvey Vale.

The Championship looks like it will be extremely tough next season, but clubs like QPR will feel the extended play-off format gives them a much better chance of reaching the Premier League, so some major decisions are looming for the hierarchy at Loftus Road.
