FLW's QPR fan pundit doesn't think that his club should be targeting a striker this summer, amid links to Adama Sidibeh

Adama Sidibeh's meteoric rise up the footballing food chain may be set to continue this summer, as Stockport County face a tough task to keep the Gambian at Edgeley Park.

This time, three seasons ago, Sidibeh was gearing up for a season in the Northern Premier League with Warrington Rylands. Now, there's a high chance that the 28-year-old could be playing Championship football in August.

As revealed exclusively by Football League World, QPR, Bristol City and Swansea City are forming a disorderly queue to pry Sidibeh away from Stockport, after an encouraging second half of the campaign at Edgeley Park, following his move from St Johnstone in January.

The 28-year-old scored 10 goals in 25 games for the Hatters, including a couple of Wembley strikes in the Vertu Trophy and League One play-off finals, and has been a handful for defences throughout his short time in the EFL.

The Gambian frontman seems destined for Championship football, but perhaps the current saturated striker position at QPR could rule out a move to Loftus Road.

QPR fan pundit "surprised" at Adama Sidibeh interest

QPR have invested a lot in their frontline over the past year, bringing Rumarn Burrell and Richard Kone to the club in the summer, spending up to £5 million on the latter. In January, they added to that with Coventry City's Justin Obikwu, who has yet to be seen after picking up a fibular injury shortly after arriving.

With academy product Rayan Kolli in reserve, too, FLW's Hoops fan pundit, Louis Moir, doesn't see the point of investing in yet another striker this summer.

"I'm not surprised to see us interested in Sidibeh," he acknowledged. "I'm sure his name came up, and we were linked with him before he went to Stockport.

"But, you look at the situation with the strikers we already have, and you'd have to say it'd be pretty pointless to look at another one. The only way we sign one is if Kone or Burrell gets sold.

"We've got Kone and Burrell, Kolli has been playing up front, and then we have Obikwu, too. Since we signed him, we haven't seen him; he hasn't played at all, so we have him to get fit and show what he can do throughout pre-season. He's another option.

"If one of them goes, maybe you should think about getting another one in. You do need four at this level with the amount of games we play and the injuries you pick up — we saw last season with Burrell getting injured. Kone has had some issues as well."

Moir does believe that Sidibeh is ready for a Championship move, but with the strength in depth at the top end of the pitch at Loftus Road, the fan pundit feels it's worth investing elsewhere to craft a more well-rounded team to have a crack at the reformed play-offs.

Burrell, Kone, Kolli and Obikwu are all aged 25 or under, and the latter three are under 23, so he believes that there'll be enough natural improvement and progression that would make the current quartet good enough to lead the line once more next season.

"Sidibeh has done well for Stockport. He looks like a decent player, and he's someone who could cause problems in the Championship, but I'd be surprised if we're linked with another striker," he continued. "Unless someone departs, I can't see it happening at all.

"Burrell and Kone have done well in their first seasons in the Championship and will only get better. Obikwu might turn out to be decent, and Kolli would be another good option, too.

"I think we need to prioritise other positions, like full-back, midfield and in goal, so I'd be surprised if we signed another striker, that's for sure."

When it comes to scoring goals, QPR were a top-half team in the Championship this past season, and before his injury layoff, Burrell was one of the most exciting attacking players in the second tier, with 10 goals in 26 games.

As Moir alluded to, the natural progression of both him and Kone, who is still one of the brighter prospects in the EFL after his breakthrough at Wycombe Wanderers, plus the anticipation surrounding what Obikwu can do, should have QPR set up top.

Meanwhile, the Hoops had the second-worst defensive record in the division, with only Sheffield Wednesday conceding more times than Julien Stephan's side. A lot of that was down to poor goalkeeping, but defensive additions overall will need to be made.

And then, with the likes of Isaac Hayden already leaving and Sam Field likely to follow after spending the latter half of the year at Norwich City, midfield reinforcement is key too. Therefore, a pursuit of Sidibeh may be far down the priority list at Loftus Road this summer.

That can only be good news for QPR's competitors in the chase for the Stockport striker, especially Bristol City, who lacked a focal point to their attack last season, especially after Anis Mehmeti left in January.

Time will tell whether the 28-year-old will be on the move this summer, but if the Championship is in his sights, QPR may not end up being the destination.
