With Cifuentes trying to force an exit, the R's should be considering Miron Music.
With Marti Cifuentes seemingly desperate to force an exit from QPR in the summer, the R’s should be keeping a close eye on developments involving Miron Muslic and Plymouth Argyle.
Although the Pilgrims ultimately saw their relegation to League One confirmed on the final day of the season, the Austrian has received plenty of plaudits for re-vitalising the side in the second half of the season and taking their survival fight down to the final game.
However, he has been critical of the structure behind the scenes at Plymouth of late, with his comments potentially suggesting that his future at the club could be in doubt.
With QPR’s relationship with Cifuentes surely irreparable now, the West London outfit should be paying particularly close attention to events at Home Park, because Muslic could be the perfect man to take over next season if he becomes available.
With the Championship season now having drawn to a close, QPR find themselves in a somewhat unfamiliar position.
Despite Cifuentes being placed on gardening leave last week, the R’s boss is technically still in charge of the club.
That decision resulted in assistant coaches Kevin Betsy and Xavi Calm taking charge of the team’s final game of the season at the weekend, which resulted in a 1-0 victory away at Sunderland.
While the Spanish boss is yet to lose his job on a permanent basis, the relationship between him and the hierarchy at Loftus Road is surely now damaged beyond all repair.
The saga began when it was revealed that Cifuentes was considering leaving his post in the summer, after a breakdown in his relationship with the club’s chief executive, Christian Nourry.
The former Hammarby chief was believed to be unhappy with several elements behind the scenes at the London club, prompting reports that his exit may be imminent.
Things then took a turn when Cifuentes’ representatives met for talks with West Brom over their vacant managerial position and, when the 42-year-old failed to take a planned training session, QPR were forced into action.
Somewhat incredibly, Cifuentes is now not believed to be on the Baggies’ shortlist, and his decision to rock the boat at QPR now looks to be a confusing one.
Although there potentially could be scope for Cifuentes to return to the club, his actions have now surely left him facing the axe on a permanent basis.
There have been several bright young managers in the Championship this season and, after nearly keeping Argyle up, Muslic has to be up there with the most exciting.
The Austrian immediately received plaudits when his rousing speech to the players, which came just days after he walked into the club, gained significant traction on social media.
Since then, the Pilgrims have vastly improved on the pitch, to the point where survival in the second tier became a very realistic possibility towards the end of the season.
Seemingly dead and buried when Muslic was appointed in early January, the former Cercle Brugge man oversaw a remarkable upturn in form which almost kept them in the division.
Since his first game against Oxford United on 14th January, Muslic’s men have been in the top half of the form table across the final 21 games of the season, a run which showcased his ability as a manager.
That was also perfectly clear from Plymouth’s FA Cup win over Liverpool, when Muslic’s side defended manfully and resolutely to keep a clean sheet and knock out the eventual Premier League champions.
However, his future was cast into doubt ahead of their clash with Leeds United last weekend, when the 42-year-old suggested that he would require a sporting director in order to progress the club in the long-term.
While he has since clarified his love for Plymouth and the meaning behind his statements on X, there are understandable doubts over whether he wants to manage a club in the third tier.
With that in mind, it makes sense for QPR to pay close attention to how the situation plays out in Devon.
Having now finished outside the Championship’s top half in each of the last three seasons, the R’s desperately need to get their next appointment right if they want to begin to work towards an eventual return to the top-flight.
Assuming Cifuentes does ultimately depart the club for good, then they would surely look for another progressive, young manager to come in and pick up where he left off.
