Parreira and Milutinovic hold the record of coaching five nations at World Cup finals, with Henri Michel on four. This edition features four managers on a third flag, Carlos Queiroz, Marcelo Bielsa, Dick Advocaat and Renard.
El Periódico Mediterráneo notes that Rudi Gutendorf, who died in 2019, aged 93, coached at least 14 national teams, perhaps more than 20, yet never reached a World Cup. No one managed more.
Queiroz, 73, is at his fifth World Cup, three with Iran in 2014, 2018 and 2022. Hired by Ghana in April, the last 16 remains his ceiling, Spain eliminating his Portugal in 2010.
Bielsa, 70, exited at the groups with Argentina in 2002. He took Chile to the last 16 in 2010, losing 3-0 to Brazil, and now targets progress with Uruguay.
Advocaat, 78, leads Curaçao and, after a draw with Ecuador, their hopes depend on beating Ivory Coast on Thursday at 22.00. He took Netherlands to the 1994 quarter-finals before a 3-2 defeat by Brazil. In 2006 he went out in the groups with South Korea.
Renard, 57, is the only coach to work at both men’s and women’s World Cups, leading France to the 2023 women’s quarter-finals. He has four World Cups in total after group exits with Morocco in 2018 and Saudi Arabia in 2022. Tunisia are already out, he arrived for the second match after Sabri Lamouchi was sacked following a 5-1 loss to Sweden, then lost 4-0 to Japan before Netherlands at 1.00.
