Niall Quinn believes that his iconic penalty save against Derby County at Maine Road saw him undeservedly win the club's 1990/91 Player of the Year Award.
Speaking as part of the first episode of our latest City Studios feature, City Stories, Quinn recounts the dramatic events that day alongside some other key players that day such as Peter Reid and Tony Coton.
After scoring a sweet left-footed volley to give us the lead, Quinn could only watch as goalkeeper Coton brought down Dean Saunders in the box.
Coton was sent off and with no substitute shot stopper to call upon, it fell to Quinn to take the gloves.
He made an incredible save from the resulting penalty to further his status as a cult hero at Maine Road.
As that was the penultimate home game of the 1990/91 campaign, it was fresh in the mind of season ticket holders when they came to cast their votes for the season's outstanding player.
Quinn took home the prize, despite his admittance that flying winger David White was our star man that term.
"In those the fans voted for Player of the Year on a piece of paper and put it in a box," he said.
"Everybody knows, me included, that David White was our best player that season. He was unbelievable, he had a great year.
"But I ended up saving a penalty and for some reason all the fans voted for me!
"I got Player of the Year out of one moment."
White added a second for City before a late Mick Harford header for Derby robbed Quinn of his clean sheet.
It didn't ruin the memory for the Ireland international though, with the now-58-year-old claiming he still has some memorabilia from the experience to this day.
"I have the gloves that Tony had thrown at the referee. They're somewhere, I think my mother kept them anyway!" he said.
The first episode of City Stories features interviews with many who were there on the day, as well as excerpts from current stars Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish and Matheus Nunes as they watch the footage back.
