Matt Law of the Telegraph has already been speaking about his thoughts on the move and its merits relative to a switch to the Championship.
“It looked like Ipswich at one stage, which looked kind of really good. But now it looks more likely Sunderland. It seems talks are quite advanced. Chelsea will try to get as many guarantees as you possibly can that he’s going to play X amount of games or be involved enough, but you can never be sure of those supposed guarantees,” Law said on the London is Blue podcast.
“It’s an interesting one for sure – if he played [for Ipswich], OK so he might go to the Championship and score 15 goals. And if he plays regularly in the Premier League he might score 5 goals. But for his development, if he can play 20 Premier League games, that will probably be better for him in the long run than playing an entire Championship season.”
We know what he means – and certainly in terms of increasing his value and getting teams interested, 5 Premier League goals would probably count for more than 15 a tier below.
But in Guiu’s specific case, he’s just played so few senior minutes in his entire career that we tend to think that 30 or 40 games in the Championship would benefit him more than being a sub in the top flight. In reality, as we said at the time, last season was when he should have been getting a year of second tier action under his belt.
Still if he makes an impact for Sunderland right away and secures a starting spot early doors, this could be a masterstroke move.
