Signage at the Rafa Mir municipal ground in Javalí Nuevo was vandalised a day after the striker was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for sexual assault, a verdict he says he will appeal. Murcia named the pitch after Mir in 2021 following his Olympic silver with Spain. He spent this season at Elche on loan from Sevilla.

Boards bearing his name and image were targeted, bars were drawn across one and the other was almost completely erased.

Mir has maintained the encounter was consensual. “No one expected this, an agreement was proposed before trial and it was not accepted because he would have had to admit the facts, and at no time has Rafa wanted to admit the facts because they are not true.” He was speaking to Antena 3’s Y ahora Sonsoles, which also reported that Murcia’s city council is not considering removing his name from the ground until there is a final ruling.

Sebastián added: “They have cut short the career of a boy who only wanted to succeed playing football.” He also said: “What police officer would risk falsifying a report?”

His parents, former footballer Magín Mir and Cristina Vicente, remain at home in Mallorca and in shock. The lawyer for one of the two complainants said the women are “satisfied” with the verdict and with 64,000 euros in compensation.
