Rafa Obrador has reflected on his 2025 move to Benfica, made as the club also negotiated Álvaro Carreras’s exit to Real Madrid. The Spain under-21 international is now on loan at Sassuolo after struggling to convince.

"When Benfica called me, I did not think much. It was a great opportunity. The dream of any player is to play in the Champions League and Benfica always compete in Europe. It is a giant club," he told Sassuolo’s media.

Obrador failed to secure a first-team place, featuring only once for Benfica before a loan to Torino. In Turin he enjoyed more minutes and made 17 appearances.

He has returned to Italy this season with Sassuolo, who hold an option to buy set at seven million euros. Whether that is triggered will depend on his displays and the club’s decision.

Benfica signed him from Real Madrid for five million euros about a year ago. Madrid kept a clause for 50% of any capital gains on a future sale, and if Sassuolo proceed at the stated price, Benfica would receive three and a half million euros while half of the capital gains would go to Real Madrid.
