Ralf Rangnick used Austria’s 5-1 win over Ghana last Friday, in which Borussia Dortmund’s Carney Chukwuemeka made his debut, to question the player’s German and the support he is receiving at club level.
According to BuLi News, the Austria head coach was dissatisfied with Chukwuemeka’s lack of German, which he feels should be improving while at Dortmund.
Rangnick said he was somewhat surprised by the midfielder’s limited German and indicated that the club bears responsibility for helping him progress.
Referencing his time at Leipzig and Hoffenheim, he recalled that language lessons three times a week were compulsory, and missing them was treated like skipping training without an excuse.
He added that clubs should actively support players who grew up abroad in learning the language, calling it essential to their integration.
Chukwuemeka, born in Vienna but raised in England, has recently struggled in German-language interviews, with some conversations then continuing in English.
