Former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón has played down the prospect of Mourinho taking charge again, amid growing suggestions Álvaro Arbeloa will not continue in 2026/27.

"What I know about José Mourinho is what he did when he was here. He won only one La Liga title in three years and did not reach a Champions League final. I know which coaches had success and they do not have his personality. Zidane, Del Bosque and Ancelotti," said Calderón. He was speaking to talkSPORT.

"They all used different methods and systems, convincing the players, not imposing their authority, which is very important when you are dealing with the egos of top stars in the dressing room. That is my opinion. We already know what happened before, so I would look for coaches who have those characteristics."

Mourinho took over at Real Madrid in the summer of 2010, succeeding Manuel Pellegrini, and left in 2013 when Carlo Ancelotti arrived.

Across that spell he oversaw 178 official matches, recording 128 wins, 28 draws and 22 defeats. He won one league title, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, halting a Barcelona side led by Pep Guardiola and featuring Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta and Xavi Hernández.
