Rangers 1-2 Hibernian: Wright winner compiles Rangers misery at Ibrox | OneFootball

Rangers’ barren start to the season continued at Ibrox this afternoon, as they fell to a 2-1 loss against Hibernian.

Josh Campbell opened the scoring after 11 minutes, when he converted a penalty which was controversially awarded after a VAR review. Rangers took their time finding an equaliser, but it eventually came in the 85th minute when Miguel Chaiwa turned the ball into his own net to level the score.

The eventual winner came in the 93rd minute, through Callum Wright, who fired low and hard into the bottom corner to win his side all three points.

Rangers named six changes following their disappointing defeat in the Europa League on Thursday night, the headline difference being that Olwethu Makhanya made his Rangers debut. Meanwhile, Hibs made four changes from their midweek outing at Easter Road, three of those forming a new-look frontline that did not include Martin Boyle.

The referee was sent to the VAR monitor in the opening 10 minutes to review a potential foul by Vanja Dragojevic, which resulted in a Hibs penalty. Campbell stepped up to the spot and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give the Edinburgh side the lead.

Youssef Chermiti looked to get Rangers an immediate equaliser, but after bringing the ball down beautifully, he fired wide of the post. Minutes later, Dragojevic took aim from range to try and right his earlier wrongs, but was unable to hit the target.

Chermiti came close again shortly after, having his shot cleared off the line following some lovely play on the right flank by Daisuke Yokota. Unfortunately for Rangers, the Portuguese forward was subbed off in the 36th minute due to injury; he was replaced by Ryan Naderi.

Dragojevic came close again before half-time, steaming onto the ball on the edge of the area and unleashing a ferocious volley that dipped just wide. Rangers’ final chance of the half fell to Nico Raskin, but the Belgian’s stretching effort went over the bar, meaning they went in behind at the break.

Rangers withdrew Dragojevic at half-time, so to avoid the potential of a second yellow for the Serbian debutant, replacing him with Mohamed Diomande. The Ivorian midfielder looked to have an almost immediate impact, but his curling effort was beaten away by Raphael Sallinger in the Hibs goal.

Raskin called Sallinger into action again on the hour mark; this time the Austrian got down low to save the strike. Rangers came close again mere moments later, when Lawrence Shankland broke free but saw his effort tipped onto the crossbar.

The Bears continued to push; this time, Yokota tried to find Naderi at the far post, but the German forward was just half a yard off reaching the ball. Rangers’ third change saw Raskin and Yokota make way for Thelo Aasgaard and Djeidi Gassama as the hunt for an equaliser continued into the 70th minute.

Shankland looked certain to find the net moments later, but an excellent block from Adam Mayor denied him from close range. Derek McInnes’ final change saw Ross McCrorie replace Findlay Curtis for the final 10 minutes.

A string of corners followed for Rangers, but they couldn’t make the opportunities count once again. Their equaliser finally came after a short break in play, though, when Gassama fired a low cross into the area and caused Chaiwa to turn the ball into his own net.

Shankland came close to giving Rangers the lead following the leveller when he headed goalwards, but Sallinger was on hand to keep it out. A Hibs change followed as Owen Elding replaced Mayor for the final few minutes of the match.

Gassama took aim from range in the 91st minute, but saw his fierce shot blocked. However, at the other end of the pitch, Hibernian netted the winner through Wright, who fired low and hard into the bottom corner to win his side all three points.
