Ally McCoist has backed a Rangers move for Leeds United striker Joel Piroe, with the forward’s future at Elland Road uncertain beyond this summer.

"Joel Piroe would be a great signing for Rangers," he told talkSPORT. "I think he could certainly do a job up here."

Piroe has fallen behind summer arrivals Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha in the number nine pecking order. He has not started a Premier League game since August, has one FA Cup goal and has missed three penalties in regulation or shootouts.

Daniel Farke sought another striker in January, lodging a bid for then-Wolves frontman Jorgen Strand Larsen. Attacking reinforcements will be revisited this summer and, should Leeds survive, it is hard to see anything other than fewer minutes for the Suriname international.

Links between Leeds and Rangers could smooth discussions. 49ers Enterprises took charge at Ibrox last summer, with Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe initially vice-chairman before stepping down. The clubs operate separately but enjoy a close relationship, and a January loan request from Celtic for Piroe was met with bemusement.

Leeds paid £10m plus a £2m promotion bonus for Piroe in 2023, amortised over a four-year deal, leaving roughly £3m on the books. Any sale above that would count as PSR profit. He now has more than a dozen Premier League appearances, won the 2024/25 Championship Golden Boot with 19 in 46 and debuted for Suriname in March, making it likely offers comfortably clear that benchmark.
