Rangers seek to recall Oscar Cortes as Ibrox injuries grow

It has to be said few have had as poor and tragic a Rangers career than January 2024 signing Oscar Cortes. The Colombian winger started brightly at Rangers, but once he picked up his first injury in Govan, his Ibrox career was ‘over’.
Now, it wasn’t all his fault – he suffered former manager Philippe Clement’s dreadful management of his situation. The Belgian waffler frequently brought him back when he wasn’t fit yet, and got him injured again. And of course, inexplicably fielded him on Killie’s plastic pitch when publicly confirming he wasn’t using Kemar Roofe on that turf for the same reason.
That got the Colombian completely ruined and his bright start was a thing of memory.
He could probably sue Clement, truth be told. But then, he surely knew he wasn’t fit and wasn’t ready.
Anyway, his crash was complete when, bewilderingly, Rangers gave him a new loan deal with obligation to buy.
Rangers for reasons unknown happily threw £4.5M at Cortes this summer and immediately farmed him out to Sporting Gijon.
Where, again, he is not playing and is likely to be recalled.
While we conceded that former Director of Football Recruitment Nils Koppen absolutely did nail some signings such as Jefte and Igamane, the majority of players he signed were literal garbage.
That winter window saw Silva, Cortes and Diomande arrive – at a cost of £9M. Not a penny of which was well spent.
And Rangers are desperately trying to find a way to resolve the situation. Cortes has been a total disaster, if not all his own fault.
Cortes is not a bad player. He made four sub appearances in Ligue 1 managing a staggering goal and assist in a grand total of 40 minutes of football. That’s impressive.
And in the lower leagues for Lens’ B team it was 4 goals and assists in 6 appearances.
The boy has talent, and he did show that early on at Rangers, but Clement completely mismanaged and ruined him.
And now he can’t get a game for Gijon.
Rangers are concerned at his value dropping. And will recall and loan him out elsewhere, but with Oliver Antman out injured, Rangers may just downright recall the boy period.
It’s been reported the loan would be cancelled andhe will be farmed out elsewhere. But if Rangers can get him fit he may be of use because we’re down an option now.
Either way, his Spanish adventure looks set to end.
