If a recent report from Swedish outlet FotbolDirekt (as quoted by The Scottish Sun) is believed to be true, Rangers are weighing up a summer swoop for Swedish winger Oskar Fallenius. But they are not alone in the hunt, with Old Firm rivals Celtic could also make a move if Djurgårdens set a reasonable asking fee for the highly-rated youngster.

The 23-year-old attacking ace mostly spent his youth years at IF Brommapojkarna, except for a brief two-year stint with Djurgårdens IF. He eventually broke into Brommapojkarna’s senior side as a teenager, and the promises exhibited in the second-tier of Swedish football earned him a €170k transfer to Danish top-flight outfit Brondby in January 2021.

Fallenius was an unused substitute in Brondby’s Europa League defeat against Rangers later that year. He struggled for minutes in Denmark and was sent out on loan to the Norwegian First Division club Start. Despite making an immediate impact, his time in Norway was cut short due to an injury. The Danish side recalled him for rehabilitation, but let him return to Djurgårdens for €175k in February 2023.

Why Rangers Must Snap Him Up This Summer

His strong run in the UEFA Europa Conference League must have grabbed the attention of both the Glasgow giants, particularly the Light Blues, who are expected to undergo a squad rebuild in the wake of their impending Andrew Cavenagh-led 49ers Enterprises takeover.

While the work is in progress for the managerial appointment, Rangers have released Ianis Hagi and Tom Lawrence upon the expiration of their Ibrox contracts. Vaclav Cerny has returned to Wolfsburg after a successful season-long loan stint and is now a £9m transfer target for Turkish side Trabzonspor. The Gers are not in a position to match such an astronomical fee and could set their sights on Fallenius, who would be a cheaper alternative. His ability to slot in on both flanks would offer flexibility high up the pitch.

Meanwhile, Rangers are likely to part ways with Nedim Bajrami amid interest from Germany and Italy. Despite being one of the high-profile summer signings, the Albanian failed to live up to the expectations as a wide midfielder. Ross McCausland has been below par, whereas the Gers are obliged to gamble £4m on Oscar Cortes, who had his loan stint from Lens disrupted due to persistent injury problems. Yet, a fresh start could benefit the 21-year-old Colombian, as he exhibited a glimpse of his mastery in limited minutes.

Fallenius, too, could be an exciting addition unless they are beaten by Celtic in the transfer race. The assurance of game time would be a lot more in the blue half of Glasgow, considering their transition under the new leadership.
