It has been a busy summer so far for Rangers, who have now completed their sixth signing, with Cammy Devlin set for a reunion with Derek McInnes upon the expiration of his Hearts contract. The midfield ace opted not to extend his stay at Tynecastle and penned a two-year deal with the option for a further year in Glasgow.
The 28-year-old Australia international progressed through the Sutherland Sharks and Western Sydney Wanderers academies before featuring for their reserves. He also had a stint with Sydney FC’s youth setup in the NPL, while making 9 senior appearances during the 2018-19 season. Wellington Phoenix snapped him up on a Bosman in 2019 and eventually handed him key first-team status.
Devlin’s composure in the middle of the park caught the eye of the Jambos scouts, who secured his services for €36k in August 2021 – a couple of months after he plied his trade at Newcastle Jets. He made 176 appearances for the Scottish side and was integral to their dream title run, which ended in heartbreak against Celtic in the final gameweek.

McInnes, who has now replaced Danny Rohl as the new Rangers boss, has brought him in to bolster their midfield. He made the most tackles per 90 minutes, ranked second for interceptions and defensive contributions, and third for recoveries among all midfielders in the previous Premiership season. Currently on holiday following the Socceroos’ elimination from the World Cup, Devlin has labelled his move as ‘an absolute honour and privilege’.
“Cammy is obviously a player I know, and I am well aware of what he will offer to Rangers. His levels of consistency for me were superb, and he is the type of player that every manager wants in his team.”
Said the Scottish boss, who is excited to have him for a second successive campaign.
Meanwhile, Rangers have also tied down former Sunderland star Dan Neil as a free agent. Lewis Ferguson, Jens Hjertø-Dahl, Vanja Dragojević and Ryan Fosso have emerged as their midfield targets, even though they are well-equipped in the centre of the pitch with Nicolas Raskin, Connor Barron, Mohamed Diomande and Tochi Chukwuani being the preferred options last season.
Nevertheless, a few exits are on the cards, as Raskin is expected to complete a mega-money move amid interest from a host of suitors. Barron could be utilised in a player-plus-cash deal for Ferguson, and the outcast pair José Cifuentes and Lyall Cameron are likely to be offloaded in the coming days.
Devlin is a system player who flourished in McInnes’ four-man midfield. His elite tackling, box-to-box presence, passing retention and tactical discipline could see him involved week in, week out. He would not only restore depth but also quality in the wake of several departures, thus emerging as a crucial squad player under his former Hearts gaffer.
