Roma governors Dan and Ryan Friedkin tried to find common ground between Gian Piero Gasperini and Claudio Ranieri for about a week, but they ultimately couldn’t, and the senior consultant is on his way out, Corriere della Sera reports.
The former coach discussed the legal and economic details of his exit in a remote meeting with the owners on Thursday. He’ll leave on the table a contract until 2027 with €1.5M wages. He took on the role last year after ending his storied career on the bench.
Both Gasperini and Ranieri told the Roma owners it was an either-or situation, and they chose the boss. The Premier League-winning manager contributed to the choice and the chase of the ex-Atalanta gaffer last summer. However, the two quickly started butting heads over several matters, from the transfer market to the communication style and the medical staff.
The 74-year-old routinely came to the defense of other execs and staff members amid the tactician’s tirades. The Giallorossi’s second-half swoon further escalated the situation. Director Frederic Massara is on the hot seat now.
The veteran could be in the running for a role in the new federal structure, as he’s on good terms with presidential candidate Giovanni Malagò. He had turned down the Italy job after Luciano Spalletti’s ousting to avoid creating problems for the capital club and a conflict of interest.
It’s a lot easier to overhaul the management than to change the coach in this kind of situation, especially when there’s a gulf between their respective resumes. The gaffer will have to deliver and stay in his lane next season, especially if they hire an official tight with him, or he’ll be next on the chopping block.
