Barcelona’s unbeaten run in La Liga came to a crushing end as Sevilla handed the champions a 4-1 defeat at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
Without key players Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, and with Robert Lewandowski missing a penalty, Barça were completely outplayed in an entertaining but humbling encounter.
Sevilla dominated from the off, pressing high and keeping Barcelona pinned back. The opening goal came via a penalty in the 20th minute after Ronald Araújo fouled Isaac Romero in the box.
Former Arsenal and Manchester United player Alexis Sánchez stepped up and made no mistake, firing the ball past Wojciech Szczesny and giving the home side an early advantage.
The hosts doubled their lead shortly after, Romero finishing a swift counterattack to make it 2-0 inside the first half-hour.
Barcelona did manage a lifeline just before the break. Pedri’s precise cross found Marcus Rashford, who volleyed home to give the visitors hope heading into the second half.
However, any momentum was short-lived. Early in the second half, Rashford was fouled in the area, but Lewandowski’s penalty was saved by Odysseas Vlachodimos, a miss that proved costly.
Sevilla punished Barcelona in the closing stages with two more goals. José Ángel Carmona and Akor Adams capitalised on late mistakes, turning what could have been a narrow defeat into a heavy 4-1 scoreline. Barcelona continued to push, but their efforts were repeatedly thwarted by Vlachodimos, while Sevilla’s counterattacks remained lethal until the final whistle.
The result leaves Barcelona with 19 points, slipping behind Real Madrid at the top, while Sevilla leapfrogs into fourth place with 13 points, celebrating a dominant display against one of the league’s heavyweights.
