Rasmus Hojlund is expected to leave Manchester United this summer.

Unfortunately for the Danish international, things have not quite worked out for him at the Theatre of Dreams.

Across two seasons at United, Hojlund failed to reach the levels the club had hoped for when they agreed a £72 million deal with Atalanta to bring him to the Premier League.

The 22-year-old has made 62 league appearances over the last two campaigns, scoring just 14 goals, a return so underwhelming that United could no longer persist with the status quo.

A change up front was needed, and that change has now arrived in the form of a £74 million swoop for Benjamin Sesko.

The Slovenian has been signed to offer what, with Hojlund, Ruben Amorim’s side lacked: a technically gifted striker who can not only score goals but also terrorise opposition defences and dominate play in the final third.

Amorim is banking on Sesko combining with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to transform the dynamics of his attack. He is so confident in Šeško shining alongside the two No.10s that he wants Hojlund gone.

Hojlund’s Serie A Links

Hojlund has, for a while now, been linked with a move to AC Milan.

Reports suggest the Rossoneri are working on a £6 million loan deal with a £35 million option to buy, though no breakthrough has yet been reached.

While Milan hope to get the deal over the line, Napoli, their Serie A rivals, are emerging as another serious suitor.

The reigning Italian champions are set to be without Romelu Lukaku, who is expected to miss around three months with a thigh injury. Antonio Conte needs another striking option, and Hojlund is among those being considered.

For Milan, Napoli’s sudden entry into the race adds another layer of competition in their pursuit of the ex-Atalanta forward.

Fulham not in the picture

Fortunately for Milan, one other rival has now been ruled out of the transfer race.

Fulham were recently also linked with a move for Hojlund, but it has since emerged that they are not in contention for the United striker.

The Standard Sport’s Sam Tabuteau clarified:

“Reports stating Fulham have enquired about Rasmus Højlund are wide of the mark.”

While Hojlund is keen on staying at United, a switch to Fulham to continue playing in the Premier League might have made sense.

But a switch from Old Trafford to Craven Cottage is now off the table.

In the end, with Hojlund’s future at United looking bleak, it may come down to which of the Italian heavyweights can convince him to join them.
