Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has spoken enthusiastically about both the club’s new project under Jose Mourinho and the potential arrival of Bernardo Silva.

The centre-back was attending the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix at Montmelo, where he spoke with Spanish media about a range of topics, including Spain’s World Cup campaign and the future direction of Real Madrid.

On Mourinho’s arrival

Speaking to ElDesmarque, Asencio expressed his excitement about Mourinho’s return to the Santiago Bernabeu, recalling the impact the Portuguese coach had during his first spell at the club.

“Now, with Mourinho’s new project, I think it’s very exciting and I’m really looking forward to starting,” the Real Madrid defender said.

“I was little and I saw it, how the team changed, the competitiveness he introduced to the club, the passion and grit … I think those are characteristics that define me as a player.”

Asencio believes Mourinho’s mentality could be key as Real Madrid attempt to reclaim the La Liga title after two seasons dominated by Barcelona.

“I’m really excited to start with him at the helm. Yes, of course. He set the record, let’s go for it.”

On Bernardo Silva’s signing

Asencio also commented on the speculation that Bernardo Silva had already agreed a move to Real Madrid and was full of praise for the experienced Portuguese international.

“He’s very, very good, it would be a real boost for the team,” acknowledged the academy graduate.

The defender added that the squad would welcome any top-level addition as the club continues to strengthen ahead of the new season.

“We’ll welcome anyone that comes with open arms and we’re sure that the project being built is incredible.”

On Spain’s World Cup chances

Asencio is not a part of the Spain squad at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Although he has previously been called up by Luis de la Fuente without becoming a regular member of the squad, he remains a passionate supporter of La Roja.

“From here, as a Spaniard and as an admirer, I support the team , I wish them the best, that they reach the final and can win and celebrate together.”

Spain begin their World Cup campaign against tournament newcomers Cape Verde, and Asencio is expecting a comfortable victory.

“We’ll win 4-0, I think it’s a good result.”
