A devastating late slip from David Raum inside the penalty area gifted Martijn Kaars the chance to score a 93rd-minute equaliser from the spot, cancelling out Yan Diomande’s second-half strike and allowing St. Pauli to snatch a point deep into stoppage time.

Backed by a raucous Millerntor crowd, St. Pauli began with clear intent, showing little fear against their more illustrious opponents as they pressed aggressively from the outset, fully aware that wins must start arriving soon. Despite that early initiative, it was Leipzig who fashioned the first real chance when Xavier Schlager collected the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a fierce effort that crashed back off Nikola Vasilj’s post -  an early warning for the hosts.

Ricky-Jade Jones was a constant thorn in the Leipzig defence during the first half, repeatedly finding joy with runs in behind. His best opportunity arrived shortly after the 20-minute mark as he latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Joel Chima Fujita, only for Willi Orbán to produce a remarkable last-ditch recovery, poking the ball away just as Jones prepared to pull the trigger.

Leipzig should have taken the lead just before the interval. Two minutes into stoppage time, Rômulo found himself in acres of space on the right side of the penalty area, but the Brazilian could only drag his shot agonisingly wide of the far post with Vasilj well beaten. The sides went in level at the break.

After a largely uneventful opening 25 minutes of the second half, the visitors finally made the breakthrough on 66 minutes. David Raum’s corner was only partially cleared to Yan Diomande on the edge of the box, and the Ivorian made no mistake, taking a touch before rifling a shot into the top left corner via a slight deflection off Eric Smith to give Leipzig the lead.

With St. Pauli seemingly beaten, fortune swung their way in dramatic fashion late on. A slip from Raum inside his own area saw the full-back collide with Martijn Kaars, leaving the referee with little choice but to point to the spot. Kaars stepped up himself and calmly squeezed the penalty past Péter Gulácsi into the bottom left corner to level the scores in the 93rd minute.

Ole Werner will feel his side let two points slip away despite climbing above Stuttgart into fourth place on goal difference. For St. Pauli, it was a fifth game without a win, but a point rescued in such dramatic circumstances could yet provide valuable momentum as they remain rooted in 17th.
