Less than 24 hours after Augusto Batalla confirmed a serious tibia injury, Rayo Vallecano have moved for Eibar goalkeeper Jonmi Magunagoitia. According to as.com, initial contact has been made, although any agreement remains distant. Osasuna’s Aitor Fernández has also been sounded out.
Magunagoitia has been Eibar’s first choice in each of the past two Segunda seasons and finished as the division’s second least-beaten keeper last term. He fits a request from coach Beñat San José, who has an Eibar past and worked with him for the past year and a half.
He has one year left on his Ipurua contract, the final season of a deal signed for two campaigns with an option. That option was activated in February following a run of appearances. Eibar could still negotiate, given the difficulty of retaining one of their leading figures next season.
Across the last two years he has ranked among the league’s top three keepers. In 24/25 only Dituro and Dani Jiménez conceded fewer, and the previous year only Ander Cantero. He delivered 18 clean sheets and fewer than one goal conceded, and played every league minute as Luis López featured only in the Cup.
This summer he attracted sustained interest, including from the three newly relegated sides and Almería, with Almería and Mallorca pushing hardest. He rejected all offers to complete his final year at Eibar. Now he is open to a Primera move, with a decision likely soon, though club-to-club talks may run late and Eibar would also need a replacement.
