RB Leipzig captain David Raum sadly found himself in a similar position as the beginning of the season when commenting on his team’s latest loss to Bayern Munich. When Bayern demolished Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on opening night back in August, Raum remarked that his team “got punched in the mouth.“
As Leipzig’s 2025/26 Bundesliga “Rück-Runde” kicked off at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday night, things initially shaped up to be quite different. Leipzig outplayed Bayern over the entire course of the first half and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Unfortunately, the German league leaders stormed back to score five goals in the second half and left the German Red Bulls picking up the pieces again following a 1-5 home loss. One wonders if Leipzig are looking forward at all to getting another crack at Bayern soon in the DFB Pokal quarterfinals.
“We put in an almost perfect performance in the first half,” RB head coach Werner told German public broadcaster ARDafter the match. “The only thing missing was effectiveness in front of goal. We should have been leading by more at the break. We had the chance to take something away or even win until the 80th minute [FCB keeper Manuel Neuer made two monster saves] When you create chances like that against Bayern, you simply have to lead by more.“
“Today’s result has two sides to it,” Raum added in the mixed zone. “The first 70 minutes were good from us. We played courageously, won a lot of balls and created chances. In the end, though, we still suffered a clear defeat at home. That shouldn’t happen to us, we have to analyze it critically. We lost our heads, and we have to take a good look at ourselves.”
