Corinthians politics are febrile, with debate over whether president Osmar Stabile can stand later this year despite a re-election ban. With at least four months until the electoral window opens, manoeuvring is under way at Parque São Jorge.

According to Globo.com, club factions and electoral-law specialists are split, some seeing a lawful route and others branding any bid an attempted coup.

The statute, tightened in 2008 after Alberto Dualib’s four straight wins from 1993 to 2007, forbids re-election. An article 103 clause allows a run only if a vacancy arises mid-term.

Members last elected Augusto Melo, suspended on 26 May last year and impeached on nine August over alleged irregularities in the VaideBet deal, breaches of the General Sports Law and statute violations. As first vice-president, Stabile took over, then won a councillors-only vote on 25 August 2025.

The dispute centres on whether he will have completed 18 months by 31 December 2026. The opposition counts from 26 May 2025, placing month 18 on 26 November 2026, while allies count from 25 August 2025, which would leave him eligible.

The Electoral Commission, five councillors appointed by the Deliberative Council president, will rule on any bid, though court action is expected. Stabile has not launched a campaign, and an 18 April assembly will vote on statute changes including Fiel Torcedor suffrage and a clause designed to let him run.
