Reactions: “Scoring last-minute goals has become a strength of ours”

Sebastian Kehl (in the mixed zone): “We didn’t play particularly well in the first half, but we improved significantly in the second. We took a 2-0 lead, but then found ourselves in a situation where we had to hold our breath at the end. We only have ourselves to blame for that, due to two set pieces. That was unnecessary. Nevertheless, we still won the game. That’s positive. But there are a few things we can certainly do better and want to do better. We sometimes make it difficult for ourselves because of sloppiness. We have the technical ability. We need to be sharper and finish games like this 2-0, with confidence, leaving no room for doubt at the end.”

Niko Kovac (at the press conference): “Finding the necessary space wasn’t easy. We didn’t make it easy for ourselves either. The second half was good right up until 2-0. But then we missed the chance to keep our foot on the gas. The fact that it got tense again was down to us. The fact that we pulled it off in the end shows that the team believes until the very end and can make things right in added time. The victory was very important for us.”

Julian Brandt (in the mixed zone): “After the last few weeks and months, in which we conceded a few last-minute goals, it has almost become a strength of ours to score last-minute goals. I’m obviously extremely happy that we managed to pull it off, but it’s also a shame that we got ourselves into this situation in the first place. We were very careless in possession. What we didn’t do well today was to calm the game down. We got ourselves into trouble. Either we don’t concede a goal or we concede two or three straight away. These are certainly issues that we need to address quickly.”

Emre Can (on Sky): “As so often this season, it was a rollercoaster ride. We need to play much better. We conceded two goals from set pieces. That shouldn’t happen to us. We’ve said that many times this season. I hope we learn from it. But in the end, we won. That’s the most important thing in football. What could be better than scoring a goal in the last minute, in our stadium, and then experiencing the emotions here? It’s indescribable. Before the penalty, I just thought: It’s going in, and I’m going to celebrate. You have to manifest it, you can’t doubt it, even if there’s a penalty specialist in goal.”

Waldemar Anton (on BVB TV): “Everyone who comes to the stadium knows how powerful we can be. We believed in it until the very last moment. After going 2-0 up, we did a little less. We need to address that. We made too many simple mistakes. We didn’t defend well twice from set pieces. Otherwise, we didn’t allow them anything.”Transcribed by Boris Rupert
