Readers pick all-time Sunderland team for European football

Sunderland supporters have been naming their dream Black Cats line-up as their favourites gear up for a season of European football.
According to Sunderland Echo, the UEFA Europa League draw is on Friday, 28 August, when Sunderland’s eight league-phase opponents will be set.
Followers of the nostalgia-focused Wearside Echoes Facebook page were asked to choose an all-time Europa League squad from any era. These were the names with the most nominations.
Jimmy Montgomery topped the nominations for goalkeeper, the club great renowned for his iconic double save in the 1973 FA Cup final. Robin Roefs and Shay Given also drew support.
Colin Todd took a defender’s spot after 173 appearances for Sunderland, 293 for Derby and 27 for England.
Charlie Hurley, the King, remains revered, racking up 402 Sunderland appearances between 1957 and 1969.
Dave Watson, a centre half and former centre forward, played 177 times for Sunderland and 65 for England. He also scored a bullet header against Luton during the 1973 FA Cup run.
