Real Madrid have been busy so far this summer, with deals having already been concluded by the club’s sporting department. In terms of signings, they have already confirmed Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva, while the two departments have seen Dani Ceballos and Fran Garcia vacate the building.
The latter completed a move to Real Betis on Wednesday in a deal that saw Real Madrid receive €4m as well as retain a 50% sell-on clause. Garcia was heavily expected to leave this summer after dropping down to fourth in the left-back pecking order with the arrival of Cucurella, and although Premier League clubs wanted him, he has instead landed in Andalusia.
The sell-on clause means that Real Madrid will secure an exit payment in the event that Garcia is sold by Betis in the future, but it also means that they can re-sign him for significant cheaper, should that decision be made in the coming years. At the very most, they would be able to bring him back for €25m, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that Betis have put a €50m release clause in the defender’s contract.
Given that Garcia is only 26, he is yet to enter his prime years. If he manages to kick on at Betis, where he should be a regular starter, he could end up becoming useful again to Real Madrid, and €25m may not be a big overpay for a player that is also homegrown at club, which is crucial for Champions League registration rules.
Real Madrid will certainly be keeping an eye on Garcia during his time at Betis. They will hope that he does manage to become one of the best left-backs in La Liga, as it would increase his chances of being sold for big money, or it would mean that he’s worth bringing back to the club.
