Napoli are working on a new contract with Scott McTominay, whom new coach Massimiliano Allegri plans to build the midfield around, but they have to get a move on, as he could attract offers from José Mourinho and PSG, Il Mattino reports (via Tuttomercatoweb).

The Partenopei plot to make the Scot the highest-paid player in their squad, or close to it. He currently pockets about €3M annually, trailing Kevin De Bruyne, Rasmus Hojlund, Romelu Lukaku, and even Matteo Politano.

McTominay is due for an extension as he’s tied to Napoli only until 2028. The impetus could also come from the interest he might generate. The star will decide his future after the World Cup, but the Partenopei are confident he won’t go anywhere. They are plotting to shed some big salaries and are making evaluations about the Belgian duo, while they want to retain the 29-year-old.

The ace midfielder already played under José Mourinho at Manchester United for three seasons between 2016 and 2018, but he hadn’t flourished yet. Real Madrid aren’t short of options, but they are significantly retooling their squad. He could also be taken into consideration by PSG. He has notched 26 goals in two campaigns since moving to Serie A.

Our Take on Napoli and McTominay

While any side would be smart to target him, the supposed attention is likely a simple negotiating tool, or at least it’ll be for a while until the World Cup ends and the transfer market kicks into a higher gear. On the other hand, the Azzurri must address the matter this summer so they can do it serenely and with decent leverage. They’ll face a ton of pressure if they take it into next season.
